Homemade Soft Pretzels
This is always a crowd pleaser - pro-tip, dip it in some Papa John’s garlic sauce.
Ingredients
1.5 cups warm water
1 tbsp sugar
2 tsp salt
1 package of yeast (or 2.25 tsp)
4.5 cups all-purpose flour
4 tbsp melted butter
5 cups water + 1/3 cup of baking soda
1 egg, beaten with 1 tbsp water
Pretzel or coarse salt
Instructions
Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast - let bloom for 5 minutes
Add yeast to flour, salt, and butter using a dough hook in a stand mixer
Knead until smooth and elastic
Cover and rise for an hour until the dough has doubled in size
Preheat the oven to 450 when the dough has doubled
Form dough into pretzels
Heat the baking soda water to a rolling boil. Drop the dough into the water for 30 seconds - move immediately to a prepared baking sheet
Brush egg wash over each pretzel and top with salt
Bake for 12 minutes - until golden brown
